A lottery winner in Virginia has won a $1 million (£817,594) prize twice in one day.

Virginia Fike, who hails from Berryville, purchased two Powerball tickets at a truck stop ahead of the April 7 draw. She matched five out of six numbers on both tickets, winning a total of $2 million (£1.2 million).

"I'm in shock," Fike said in a statement. "I picked numbers based on my parents' anniversary and their ages at that time, divided by the year they were married. I just love the jackpot games and I play when I can afford it.

"I saw a scroll on TV about there being two $1 million winners. I looked at my mum and said, 'Wouldn't it be funny if it was us?'"

Fike - who told reporters that she had intended to buy tickets for two different games instead of two Powerball tickets - said that she will use some of her winnings to help take care of her parents.

She has also revealed that she heard about the winning tickets while she was visiting her mother in hospital.
