I wonder if the tradition of women being proposed to, rather than proposing, will ever fade (except in the case of same-sex partners, and leap-days obviously )

Hopefully. And I'd imagine it will, most social concepts evolve and disappear.

But then I hold out for utopia, so maybe I'm a little bit optimistic in that respect...
