Stapleton pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility at Manchester Crown Court.

The Crown Prosecution Service did not accept his plea of manslaughter and he is now being tried for murder.

We shall, no doubt, have witnesses describing his mental "ability" in due course.
