I recall the great sir anthony hopkins point this out one way. he said the english hated the fact he was going to hollywood to work and to live. he hated the stiffness and narrow mindedness of the west end and loved the open mindedness and opportunity he found in american. so much so he became mayor of a town, and took dual american/welsh citizenship
this anti american rhetoric has gone on on every english comedy show, quiz show, chat show for decades, now reality tv shows too
the english often make the error of mistaking sincerity for stupidity
they think all americans have no ironic humour, they ignore the legends like larry david, garry shandling, wood allen, oliver hardy, harold lloyd, buster keaton, the marx brothers, robin williams, joan rivers, emo, richard pryor, bill hicks etc etc etc they see to think ironic humour only exists in england. talk about xenophobic little englanders. its not that way in scotland or wales or ireland. yet the english consider themselves brilliant multi culturalists. they take jokes way too far

Ask alanis morrisette if americans understand irony...haha
You forgot poor old stan laurel..now isn't that ironic? don't you think?
I'm interested in the fact you mention Joan Rivers, her acidic comments cutting remarks razor sharp tongue and near the knuckle humour makes julian clary look like a care bear!
