I agree with InOne. Politics doesn't get debated on here anymore, not in the true sense of the word 'debate'. It turns into mud-slinging, insults, digs and personal party-political crusades. So yes, politics should be separate... and there was a time I never thought I would hear myself say that.

No, I thought this was leading somewhere and now it appears I am correct...
I will have my say on the topics in the serious debates section regardless of topic, be it political or not.
Politics would be debated easily if members accepted that other people have the right to challenge without scoffing at alternate views to their own.

Which is exactly why it should have it's own forum and not clog up SD with all that nonsense. News stories needs to be unmerged too.

I do agree that news stories should be unmerged. It causes some problems when we get things like 'this cat can use a toaster' etc in with more serious discussions. Gets annoying moving them all

I've tried, believe me

Admin say that if we have seperate SD/news then sometimes we end up with 2 threads discussing the same thing but in different forums.

It did a bit, but not enough to merge the two, in my opinion anyway

I'm with InOne on this and understand why he's got the view he has and he's does raise a few vaild points why he's suggested it.

I guess the sticking point is probably due to the limited amount of members on Tibb that contribute to the SD section - far less Politics discussions / debates - and that isn't viewed as warranting a sub section.

Personally I'd welcome a seperate one though.

Do you regard a News Story about (for example) a thug breaking into a house and being commended for this behaviour by a judge for his actions ''taking courage'' and being let off...as not a serious topic?

The type of news story will determine how 'serious' it is - what some regard as serious - others wont. You can't please all the people all of the time. Common sense prevails......

Politics is a huge part of life -whether interested in it or not - to suggest there should be no Political threads at all is bizarre.

Hypothetically if it was separate what difference would it make?
People would still post their opinions, and those who had differing political views would clash just the same.
I start threads in serious debates, on loads of subjects, from school dinners to the clothing manufacturing industry in the UK.....
Nobody cares, the threads are either hijacked or fade into the ether.
If I debate a point that does not fit with the majority I have been called a troll and accused of sniping many times.

Fact is, even if they were separate the most serious debate on here today from what I can see Is what lee had for tea

I personally prefer the 'can men and women ever be friends' social type of debate to the long drawn out political ones that require endless detailed facts about political issues, but it's just personal choice. I understand some like the more in-depth political or legal type discussion and that's fine with me. For pure ease of finding particular debates it would probably be easier to have two seperate sections though, in that part I agree.

If anything the threads that irritate me the most are the name dropping/arse licking threads.

I agree, some news stories are lighthearted and some have deeper social or political connotations.
It is up to you which you comment on and why, and seeing as the country is going through a series of fundamental changes there will be lots of stories with a political edge.

I agree at least during those debates you are not challenged quite so brutally for your view, or asked to provide reliable documented information to prove your point

I agree News Stories should be divided again, but I think Politics should remain in serious debates, but maybe as a sub-forum.

One of the things I enjoy about some political topics, even though I'm not personally interested in any real in-depth way as others are; is reading some very well thought out, well balanced, interesting and informative posts from those who do debate well and do enter into the spirit of such discussions in the manner in which they are intended - even if not in agreeance, but with good points being made from 'all sides'. Unfortunately, this increasingly is becoming a rarity.

You can say that again, there is not a political issue on here where some have not shouted down, belittled, berated, sneered, patronised and used both their longevity and or popularity to mask their condescension.
No matter, as long as you are true to yourself and your beliefs then that is all you can do.
We are not experts or oracles, we can only give our view and opinions based on what we see and hear.
Like you say whatever side of the fence you are on it is important to remain respectful and accepting of the fact we hold differing opinions.

A sub-forum would be good. Perhaps entitled "political arguments" because that's what they inevitably become. And it's a bore.
