John Tully, the chairman of the Metropolitan police federation, said the remarks were "outrageous" and anywhere else Mitchell would have been arrested. He said Mitchell should resign.

"As a cabinet minister, it's unacceptable for someone of his standing to use such disrespectful and abusive language to a police constable, let alone anyone else," Tully said. "If the shoe was on the other foot and my officer had said those things he'd be out of a job now. It's double standards."

It's not just labour, anyone with any half a brain knows that those who are in positions of authority do not conduct themselves in such an unprofessional and reckless manner.

I wanted to know exactly what a cheif whip did, had to laugh at wikis definition...
''The role of Chief Whip is regarded as secretive, as the Whip is concerned with the discipline of their own party's Members of Parliament''

The way I see it is that he was leaving his place of work, he clearly had gone that way many times before.
This time he was told he couldn't so he got frustrated and challenged why, when the heels werre dug in he likely did use offensive wording to the Policeman.

However, since he was not arrested and/or cautioned for the incident then the Police had nothing to report really, since without any arrest the Police left a situation whereby in their view there was no offence/crime committed.

He has then apologised to both his Boss and also the Police for his behaviour but that is not enough for some and apparantly not enough for the Police who found no reason to arrest him at all.
I don't care for the guy on seeing him but an apology for me certainly was enough in this situation and it seems odd to me that they are making such a song as to it especially in light of the fact they say, they could have but didn't arrest him.
Therein lies the facts, the Police did nothing therefore no offence was committed to answer to so why someone should lose their job in those circumstances is beyond me.

They are STILL on about this today, from what I can tell it was The Sun who broke this story, are the Sun the most truthful paper ? I dont think so,anyway for those who believe tabloid fodder as fact the guy has apologised,no one has been hurt,WHY are people still banging on about this?

It is not a case of believing the tabloids this began with experienced police officers being direspected by those who run our country.
It has a deep resonation through our communities, and is damaging not only to the police but the government.

Lead by example, this has had a devastating affect on the relationship between the govenment and the police, the public and the government..
It is very far reaching, I do not believe it is something that can be swept under the carpet.

Spot on.

It's an excuse for some to run rabid - totally and utterly blown out of proportion - two people clashed: tempers were fraught - apology given - that's it - the end.

Well if the copper is to be believed: the plebs are in charge of who goes in and out of the gates so I'm not sure why he was making a fuss in the first place!

Is he good at his job? Yes. Should he have said what he did? No. Did he apologise unreservedly, and personally to the officer on the receiving end? Yes. Did the police take any action? No. Is this insult going to devastate the copper he said it to forever? Erm... no. Massive storm in a little teacup.
