What a load of crap. how about the dutch invest in a serious science mission instead of this nonsense.

it really is annoying how Europe with all of it's vast resources has not done anything impressive in space. They just let Russia and the USA do all of the heavy lifting. Step up your game Europe. seriously.

This is a beautiful idea, and I applaud this company for having the conviction to push this forward. I often think that space exploration is something of a forgotten area nowadays. I wish governments around the world made a bigger effort with it.

That said however, the technological risks and constraints are so mind-bogglingly massive that I doubt that the efforts of just one nation plus a TV production company will ever actually amount to anything. I seriously doubt the Dutch government could fund something this monumental in size and scale. You need only look at the space race to understand that: both the USA and USSR poured billions into their respective space programmes and massive failings were seen multiple times on both sides despite the huge economies backing them up. If Martian colonisation happens I think it would require an effort on a much more global scale than this.

BY Europe i meant the EU. ESA is the European Space Agency, and Russia is not a member.

You knew what I meant though, didn't you?

I said this months ago before our national tabloids even got a hold of it. Haven't a clue why it's took them so long to catch up.

So the space shuttle explosions weren't big failings? What about those astronauts that died in a lunar module because of a fire fuelled by pure oxygen?

I'm not trying to diminish the huge successes of NASA and the USSR, but rather trying to demonstrate that even such massively funded and well managed operations run into these disastrous complications. If two superpowers had serious accidents like this, then what hope can be had for a middling regional power like the Netherlands and a TV company?

Roughly 78,000 applied for this.

Quote:
Huge numbers of people on Earth are keen to leave the planet forever and seek a new life homesteading on Mars.

About 78,000 people have applied to become Red Planet colonists with the nonprofit organization Mars One since its application process opened on April 22, officials announced Tuesday. Mars One aims to land four people on the Red Planet in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, with more astronauts arriving every two years thereafter.
