Most of the time I piss around but sometimes I worry that people don't get I'm joking and just think I'm being a ****.

Can you tell if members are pissing around, as I find it hard to tell with some sometimes.

No, I cannot and really that is my problem.
I have difficulty assessing the tone or intent behind some posts and I admit I am not really a humerous person anyway so I likely do take things sometimes too seriously if things are directed towards me.

I am trying and getting better but no is the answer in the main.

I can be quite an asshole in real life. I told my manager to get over himself today followed by telling him he was useless and hadn't a clue how to run a business. I've been back in this job for a week.
