Unfortunately, it's a result of a pack mentality. You get a small bunch of people, a fight kicks off, none of them have the balls to break it up...people start gathering around going 'oooh isn't this exciting...violence!!!' like bloodthirsty freaks, people see this crowd and wander over to see what's going on, people start getting their phones out thinking 'yay I can upload this to Facebook and get a thousand likes from people laughing at this fantastic violence!!!!1'. It's sad and pathetic. But most of us (including myself) are guilty of being one of those in the crowd just stood watching. All it'd take is for the entire crowd to just, you know, have a bit of common sense and decency and break the fight up and ask what the ****ing point of it is, but that's rarely the case.

There's something quite...morbid...about filming it though. It's like you get off on it and want other people to too. It just perpetuates it really.

Use to hate fights at school in the playground when nearly the entire playground would rush over and make a circle

There was quite a recent case which made it on This Morning etc where a girl was recorded being beaten up by 3 other girls (Daily Fail said it was cos she was ginger, but this was untrue) it happened literally 5 minutes walk away from me, I had the girl on Facebook and everything, was quite shocking tbh, they should have helped her

It could be the most vital piece of evidence for the most horrific murder, I think these people were ill-intentioned but its not always the case

How many people filmed the soldier being butchered in London this week? There was a time when people's immediate reaction would have been to intervene, to help in some way but now peopel take out their phones and film it and we all ended up seeing it on the news and on the front page of every newspaper. The cowling blows off an aeroplane's engine and the other engine catches fire... someone films it and it ends up on the news when personally I'd be calling someone I loved in case I never spoke to them again. Everyone seems to want their fifteen minutes and everyone is an action film maker.

To be truly honest, I don't think many people want to intervine when the attacker is soaked in blood and has a knife and cleaver in his hands, the filming of it all can also help in terms of evidence. What would I do if I was there though? I'd run the **** away.

This^

I was amazed at the number of people who stuck around after the soldier was murdered. If I saw two men do that to a person, I'd be absolutely terrified. I'd get the hell out of there, pronto.

I understand that lily and Chewy... and the case of the soldier being murdered was an exceptional circumstance when it comes to intervening, I suppose. But the fact that so many people stayed to watch takes morbid curiosity to a whole new level. There are lots of other incidents though where people film rather than help. I'm surprised that grabbing their phone is now most people's first reaction.

It's like when there's a car crash on the motorway and people slow down and get their phones out to take a picture...it's...strange.

I agree, on some of the footage shown on the news too, there was a woman walking up the road and then past the murderer as he was talking to the camera, I don't think he looked at her nor her to him, to me that was bizarre.

maybe she thought they were filming a movie or something? It was a very surreal scene.

I've always stood around Crime Scenes personally...I've always been weird like that. Haven't recorded anything apart from the odd bit of the Riots in 2011 though. Don't see the point.

Have to admit that didn't come to my mind, it may explain a lot.
Thanks for that Lostalex.

Yeah, I agree... and it's definitely a step up from the rubber-necking drivers do when there's a RTA. If I'm on the motorway and there's an accident in the other lane, I'll glance over, but I won't slow down to get a good look, because to be honest, I don't want to see what's there. I couldn't work for the emergency services, as I don't like the sight of death/injuries. I don't even like when a bunch of kids are fighting. If they're young enough I split it up.. if they're older [and bigger than me] I can't really do anything, but I sure as hell won't film it.

I've never been near a crime scene, and if I were, I wouldn't be hanging around. I just don't like to be near or involved with that kind of thing... unless my help is needed.. although, for the aforementioned reasons, I'm not much use to help if there's blood/guts.
