Its what they use to measure TV ratings.
People from different demographics have something like a set top box connected to their TVs. It records what they watch and when, and sends the details to BARB who release viewing figures.
So when ratings are calculated, it isn't showing what every single person watched. One person with a BARB box might represent 1000 normal people.
Basically, if you dont have one, your viewing isnt counted in the ratings.
