Today, the name "Chinese whispers" is said by some to be considered offensive. Historians trace Westerners' use of the word Chinese to denote "confusion" and "incomprehensibility" to the earliest contacts between Europeans and Chinese people in the 1600s, and attribute it to Europeans' inability to understand and appreciate China's radically different culture and worldview. Using the phrase "Chinese whispers" suggested a belief that the Chinese language itself is not understandable.

I guess I worded it wrong, I should have said 'perhaps it would be more acceptable' All I meant was that in this day and age we have to be careful in what we say because we get into trouble for anything that is deemed as racist. We live in a world of political correctness that I believe is taken way too far but there are always going to be people who get offended at particular terms. If someone called me a white so and so it wouldn't bother me in the slightest but for some it would be seen as being racist. Oh dear, I think I'm flogging a dead horse here, oh well, I know what I mean LOL. I'm sorry for laughing at what you thought, it did just make me chuckle, I'd never call it The Telephone Game.

Comedian Rob Auton has won an award for the funniest joke of the Edinburgh Fringe.

The 30-year-old, from York, was given the prize by digital TV channel Dave, whose panel put a selection of their favourites to a public vote.

He won for the joke: "I heard a rumour that Cadbury is bringing out an oriental chocolate bar. Could be a Chinese Wispa."

The top 10 funniest included jokes by Tim Vine and Marcus Brigstocke.

The judges sat through hours of material before nominating their favourite three gags for the shortlist.
