By picking the highest amount he was stating that under no circumstances did he want to take any money or leave the process.
Dexter on the other hand played it very differently, both sam and Charlie called him out on it as he went against what they had all agreed again just like he did during the voting task.
This is why he is losing the respect and trust of his fellow housemates he keeps slipping up, and he can't talk his way out of it anymore.

You are forgetting that the housemates immediately thought there was a twist to what they had been told
The twist could well have been that the person who took the most left with that amount.
As for losing respect and trust..they never respected or trusted him anyway.
