Default Why is this allowed?

Right, I had about a litre to drink this morning at school, and then in Business Studies; I was desperate for the bathroom. I asked halfway through the lesson; and She says no. She doesn't let me go for the remainder of the lesson; And I asked a few times. It's bad to tell kids to 'keep it in', It can lead to all sorts of problems and it could kill you (if you hold it for ages and ages and ages).

It's Unethical and stupid.

You should have just gone, that's what I do, if they say no I will wait for as long as I can and then I'll just go, they can't physically stop you or punish you for being desperate to use the toilet.

I had the same scenario...and In the end i was that desperate I just walked out...It's your own human right to go to the toilet. No one can stop that.

I know, that's what annoyed me about school. One time a teacher said this to me at 2:45pm "Why didn't you go at lunch?" I said "Well, I didn't need it 2h 15 mins ago!" and then said, "Well, you can wait for 45 mins until the end of school". I got up and said, "I'm sure if you were pissing yourself you wouldn't hold it in, **** this!" and walked out.

I got a bloody detention.... however the head of my year sort of reasoned with me after I said, "If I have bladder problems later in life, I am going to refer back to this situation"

I remember my first year at secondary school the teacher had left the classroom to go chat with another teacher (i think they were dating). I was desperate to go, after 20 minutes i couldnt wait any longer so I got up and went. When I returned he was back. He got mad, boomed out where have you been! I said I was desperate for the toilet and you'd left the classroom. He said What are you a puppy?
Back then I was scared of certain teachers, now Id say well next time I'll relieve myself on the floor like a puppy.

Quite right too, timing your toilet breaks and controlling your bladder is an important skill to learn growing up

How long is the longest lesson? Two hours? I would imagine most people would be able to work out a toilet routine that would mean they could do a whole class without being excused.

If you need to go they cannot stop you, there is no other environment on earth where they would say no you cant go and use the toilet. Its a total power trip and a breach of human rights. I would ask to go to be polite then if he/she said no I would reply saying I wasnt asking you I was telling you. Nothing they can do.

Seriously, I have no idea why anyone would want to go into teaching. "I wasn't asking you, I was telling you?" Jezuz...

I had a teacher who, whenever someone asked "Can I go to the toilet?", would say "I'm sure you're quite capable."

I remember this. Never suffered from it often. Annoying, nonetheless. The lenient teachers generally always let you go. Claiming you need to go to the toilet was a fantastic excuse to sneak out at dinner times.

Things have changed since I was at school - no way would we have dared to say "I was telling you" to a teacher....would have had a one way ticket to detention for cheek....

Exactly, just the attitude in saying "I was telling you" would have got you a detention.

I'm in my 30s i'm not a child. They cannot stop you from going to the toilet. Simple as that. What they gonna do call your parents down to say you walked out because you needed the toilet and the teacher wouldnt let you?

I was in no way implying you are a child - all I was saying was that when I was in school saying "I'm telling you" was a sure fire way to get a detention. I agree that they should not be able to tell you you cannot go to the toilet but that attitude certainly wouldn't have won you any points at my school and I would never have spoken to a teacher like that.

I'm sure as a teacher though it must be frustrating having your lessons disrupted by people needing a bathroom break - knowing full well that a lot of people do just use it to get out of lessons for a break...

If a child is caught deliberately using it as an excuse to skive off and cause trouble then they deserve to have the book thrown at them.

In the school I went to, if you wanted to go to the toilet you would go, a teacher would not dream of stopping you. If a grown adult is being arrogant enough to try denying a child to go to the toilet then they deserve some back chat. There is simply no genuine reason to deny a human being to answer a call of nature.

What if the child had a bladder problem they didnt want the teacher to know about and the child ended up wetting themselves?

If I had a child I would tell them if you want to go to the toilet, no matter where you are then you state you need the toilet and then go.

This, if I'd dared say anything like that when I was at school it would have been straight to the headmistress's office and the slipper.
