Seems to be more and more of these stories cropping up people having reactions to being bit by spiders, mosquitos and ticks!
![]() ''A woman who was bitten by a house spider had to be rushed to hospital and drip-fed antibiotics after the bite festered into pus-filled blister - which then burst. Julie Roberts, 41, was watching TV in her living room at her home in North Hull when the spider - which she describes as pale and whitish - scuttled up and nipped her ankle. What started off as just a small spot swelled over the course of a few days into a golf-ball sized lump and her ankle became stiff and painful. The mother-of-four went to the doctors and got some antibiotics for the bite. But she decided to go to hospital after nearly a week had gone by, and blisters began to form around the bite. She was kept in hospital for three days as doctors battled against the spider's venom and the boil burst - twice. Mrs Roberts, a secretary, said: 'The doctor said it could have poisoned my blood. The whole thing was terrifying. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/ar...-exploded.html Anybody else had a nasty bite or sting? (please don't let zee see this)

Right after I read this, I went for a ciggie in the kitchen. And there was a big spider just sat in the middle of the floor

Mum had a bite of some sort a few years ago, not sure from what, that turned into a major infection. Started out as a little bite mark on her hand, then swelled up. Ended up with her on a penicillin drip in hospital.
She wasn't going to go to hospital, she was going to just take painkillers and go to bed, but fortunately my sister in law (a nurse) had a look at it and told her she had to go to hospital immediately. When she got there, the ER nurse rather cheerily explained that the red lines now tracking up past her hand and up onto her arm used to be called 'the lines of death' in the days before antibiotics. She had cellulitis. Quite common apparently from some spider and insect bites. |

There are loads of venomous spiders that are native to the uk and about a dozen species that bite there always has been.
You can always trust the daily fail to pick an amazingly extreme case and post the picture to try and scare people with. It was most likely a false widow spider their bites are barely noticable unless you have some weird allergic reaction. falling out of bed is more likely to put you in hospital than a spider bite in the UK but you dont see the daily fail posting horror storys of the worst cases of that! They just like to prey on peoples worst fears. But carry on eh. Last edited by billy123; 16-09-2013 at 11:25 AM. |

![]() Good job your sis saw it in time, I was gardening and got what I thought was a spider on my hand and brushed it away, my hand swelled up and my fingers twitched for days... Looking back I think it was a tick, worried I might have Lymes disease now as it's getting more common in the UK.

I woke up at 2am a couple of weeks ago and had a serious itch on my right wrist, upon examining the bite I was horrified to discover a lump the size of a box of swan vesta matches had appeared. I put on some Savlon but the next morning the itch had intensified so I went to my local chemist where the Pharmacist prescribed an anti-hystamine and suggested I visit my G.P as he thought the would looked infected. After securing an emergency appointment with my Doctor he confirmed that my right arm was in fact infected and I had to have Anti-biotics and a steroid cream to reduce inflammation.
The doctor reckoned I had prbably been bitten by a Horsefly which carries bacteria from other insects/animals so this was a bite + bacteria from something else. All in All not a pleasant few days. Also - The Pharmacist said this year he had seen a threefold increase in the number of insect/wasp/mosquito bites and the bites were causing far more allergic reactions than in the past. Scary Stuff...........!!!!!
