Default Kickstarter

Have you ever invested in a project on the site?

http://www.kickstarter.com/

For those who never heard of it, the site is a place were creative people ask for funding, offering a reward of greater value for the more you fund, and each project sets a target of how much money they're after. And if that target isn't reached within the designated time, the project doesn't go ahead, well no funding changes hands so to speak.

so you give them money so they can put it towards their project and they give you somekind of item that is worth more then the money you give them? but surely if the item they were giving you was worth more then the cash you give them then they would be somewhat losing out

I'm not sure, it seems to depend on the project and the amount, a lot seem to be around the $5 or $10 mark. So I'm guessing $5 is about £2.

There was one I looked at, the guy wanted $30,000 to do something with a comic, publish it online or something, or print it. Anyway he got over $500,000.

Also people are getting their albums funded on it.

I think it's just a simplified investment thingy with a social media twist

So whatever they do with the money, and if they make profit, you get some of it

I dunno, I haven't looked at the website yet Lol

Actually, I do think I've seen this, or something like it, when bands want to go on tour but don't have enough money, so they set it up then post in on their facebooks and people donate then like a totaliser goes up until the target is met, but with that you don't get anything back, you just get to go to the show I guess

I think they can get the stuff like tshirts made cheep, so if you gave them $30, and they were doing an album, they would send you a copy of the cd and a tshirt.

It does seem as if you get your money's worth. And they get to create something they couldn't have without the funding.

If it's like a kind of a Stock Exchange for small investors, sounds like a good idea>

Well you don't get profits if the project makes money, you would just get the item or items you agreed when you pledged money.

I was looking at a game that is being developed called Elite: Dangerous that is a sequel to the 80s and 90s Elite and Frontier space-simulator games.

That was partly funded using Kickstarter. I checked there and they raised over £1.5 million. (I didn't contribute to it).

I was going to make a thread about it, but wasn't sure if anyone would be interested, lol.

I just checked that one out, and although the kickstarter has finished, the guy heading the project is directing people who still want to donate to his site.

Also those that donated £5,000 got to have dinner with the guy running it

A lot of them seem to offer stuff like that, something that costs them little but something fans value probably above what they're paying.

It seems like you can fund things that are local, and I think if you're a fan or going to get the item anyway, there is no downside.

Also I guess before people would have got into debt to banks starting things up but now the people pledging money are kinda making preordered sales before thier product is made.

..yeah it does seem as though there's no downside and could really make a difference to someone who has a great and creative idea and all they need is a little funding...and also it gets to make you feel almost like a 'little dragon', do you think people like that donate as well on a larger scale..?...anyway I am going to have a really good look through the site a bit later on today and I would rather look at things that are more local as well....

I only know about it from a video game perspective... it's risky. There was recently a Kickstarter for a game called 'Mighty No. 9' which was has similarities to a big franchise called Mega Man. I heard if Capcom (they have the rights to Mega Man) decide to sue the creator, the money people have given towards the creator of Mighty No. 9 will likely be used for legal fees and people won't get a penny back.

There have been success stories. It's risky though.
