Ugh yeah I hate chuggers as well, it's a form of harassment in my opinion - if I am walking down the high street, I don't want somebody trying to step in front of me to stop me from going to my destination to try and guilt trip me into giving money. If I want to donate money to charity, I'll do it in my own time.

Every lunchtime I have to navigate the gauntlet of Chuggers that is Hammersmith Broadway. Over the past year I have noticed a militant shift in their methods. Gone are the days they would politely ask, in a very British and demure way, if you possibly had 5 minutes to discuss climate change/cancer research/hair-lipped slum kids/African water crisis/depressed donkeys in desperate need of breast implants in Peru. Now they leap out at you all teeth and faux mirth and use such phrases as “Excuse me, madam, are you a nice person?” which, when you are in a hurry on a 30min lunch break, you have no option but to answer ‘no, sorry’. Last week one shouted enthusiastically “Hey Miss, do you care about people with cancer?!” Mouth half-full of tuna sandwich, I mumbled my standard ‘no, sorry’ without engaging my brain and felt **** about it all afternoon. So, already feeling like a heartless bitch who detests cancer sufferers, one approached me today and, without speaking, clamped his sweaty hand around mine and physically dragged me over to his table to tell me about some charitable cause. Real. Physical. Contact. And breeeaathh. Ok. a) Don’t touch me b) Don’t make people feel bad about charity they can’t afford to give when people are struggling to feed their own families c) Get a real job d) Seriously, don’t touch me. e) Have a shower. f) Here’s Ł2 to have a shower #somethingsareworthit

I get the worst of both worlds with chuggers, feel rude if I ignore them so end up getting drawn into a conversation but never have any intention of giving any money so I end up awkwardly leaving having just wasted my time and theirs

Speaking in general, obviously, but if I met two groups of English people - one from the north, one from the south, I'd be drawn to the northern group and probably hate the southern group because they have totally different types of banter and as a Scottish person it's a lot easier to get on with a northerner than a southerner... I have southern friends obviously, but if I was met with a large crowd, I'd never be drawn to the southern one.
