I think it was difficult for my parents because my brother was from my mum's first marriage and no matter how good my dad was to him, he'd still make comments about how my mum provided things for us that she never provided for him; when my mum's financial situations weren't comparable and what was she supposed to do? I don't think she felt like she could win with him because no matter how much she tried to make it up to him, he'd always be comparing his past to our present... Which is especially ridiculous because he managed to land on his feet and ended up in a great job despite everything; he has more money at his disposal than my mum's ever had in her life. When it was just her and my brother she couldn't even afford beds for them; my brother slept on the sofa and my mum slept on the floor, but she saved and saved and gave him the best she could... really upsets me that he refuses to speak to her now
