Default Is it sometimes essential to judge someone?

this was one of my late night thoughts after seeing something like this myself.

Judging people can be awful and we should always be given a change blah blah blah but do you think sometimes it's important for us to judge people?

for example, you've found a really cute kitten/puppy and you can't look after it on your own. You decide to put the animal up for adoption on your facebook/social networking account.

Just say that the first person who comments is a woman who would love the new pet in their house and has the right to the pet because they are the first person to comment. You think fair enough, first come first serve... you want to know more about this person so you go on their profile and you begin to rethink things through.

she's got pictures of her children and you can tell they aren't exactly well looked after. there's a picture of them on a couch thats covered in clothes/food stains. the kids have greasy/unwashed hair in almost every photo. she's uploaded a funny caption of the TV and all you can see on the floor is mess. she's made statuses like "He's shouting again... boohoo"

would you still give this person your pet?

I've seen something very similar to this on my facebook and does it make me a bad person if I would want to give them the pet i found?

If you don't feel comfortable giving her the pet then I wouldn't. There was a good line from The girl with the Dragon Tattoo actually that i thought was true and applies here as well, it was about us ignoring our instincts so that we don't come across as impolite or offend people

I know it's the 'hip' thing nowadays to not judge a person over anything but in my opinion everything you say or do determines you as a person and what your values are.

I think you are correct in your judgements and fair play to you for doing research.

Follow your instincts Caitlin. Even if you're wrong (I think you have just cause though) you are acting in best interests and that's commendable. Better to be safe than regret.

If you're giving up a pet you should always make sure it's going to go to a good home so judge away.

I'm not giving a pet up hahaha

its just something I saw on someone elses FB. they were saying whether or not to give a cat they found (no chip, underweight and no one claimed it) to someone that just 'didn't seem right' and people were saying how wrong she was to judge the other person on their ability to look after the cat!

i have no idea why she didnt trust the person but she mentioned how the house was messy and not looked after and oh my god, with the reactions she got, you'd think she'd said she thinks people who arent clean need to be sent to a concentration camp or something!

but it's a valid point. she said that the house was awful and wasn't taken care of properly, the kids themselves didn't look well treated... if they cant look after their kids properly, imagine looking after a cat and how it would be treated

i know its awful to judge people on certain things, but when a life (pets are lives to me IMO) is at risk, people shouldn't be so pissy about it.

She said it on FB because it was on another website that the woman put the cat for sale on

Hang on I've been thinking about this. It's actually quite iffy really, if I found a cat I would call the Cat Protection League or the RSPCA, preferably the former. Yet she's selling it? So profiting? Bit odd in my book.

She didn't say she was selling it, she was just trying to find a home for it

shes not selling it, i mean getting rid of it, passing it on or w.e

she found the cat, looked after it for a bit (RSPCA was full or something?) and put it on a website and didnt like the look of a woman who wanted it (for fair enough reasons... i think she went to the house actually) and she said on another FB group that she felt bad but knew what she did was right and people hated on her anyway

I think everyone makes snap judgements based upon first impressions. You have to, it's that ole survival instinct.

In the example you give, your friend's instincts were right. If you can't look after your kids & home properly, chances are that poor pet would have a terrible life as last in the pecking order.

Doesn't sound like a good home, to be honest.
