Africa is a political, social and economic black hole because of what European settlers did to it. There aren't enough hours in the day to go through every single reason why it's so difficult to help improve anything in Africa. HIV isn't just a health problem. For social and cultural reasons, attitudes to sexual health in Africa simply don't exist. It's an alien concept to most people, using a condom, vast swathes of people don't even have access to clean drinking water or have enough food; trying to change people's attitudes to sex just comes across as condescending, in a way. So the spread of HIV/AIDS isn't so much a health problem as it is a cultural problem - people can have sex on a regular basis but they can't eat or drink on a regular basis; why is anyone trying to take that one thing away from them (i.e. use condoms)? It's sad really... every well meaning person who donates money, goes over to build something or tries to preach for change cannot possibly tackle the logistical nightmare that is Africa.
