they arn't though they are just normal people but everyone expects them to be funny all the time. so when they are not people think they are serious.

Jim made a sitcom in the 80's, Around the elephant and castle, or some such, it was called.
It premise was he was playing himself. A loveable cockney cheeky chappie.
It was fairly popular, I remember it first hand. Thing is, he's had practice pretending to be nice, or acting the nice guy, which is what he's doing now.

Personally, I couldn't care less about any of his isms and ias, only thing which I don't like about him is his patriotism, nationalism, and jingoism. He appeals to the Lowest Common Denominator: Sun readers.
