He or she may produce new theorems which show faster than light travel is possible and advanced races may have already developed technologies to transport themselves over these long distances.

Who's to say that there are even vast distances to be traversed for them to get here.

Modern theories by well respected physicists about multiple dimensions could mean that they didn't have to travel any distance at all.

Earth might be their home planet too. (and maybe they aren't very happy with what we're doing to it)
