I really don't get the big deal - the UK's Muslim population has exploded over the last century, it's a compromise of accommodating your customer base and just generally being more tolerant to do something like this, I don't really see how it's a bad thing. There's no difference in taste or quality, it's just to do with the way the animal is slaughtered - nobody thinks about where the toppings on their pizza came from before they started eating it: if they did, they probably wouldn't have meat on a pizza. That's probably why it's been kept quiet. People don't really know what halal means, and if they bothered to find out, they'd inevitably start thinking about animal slaughter and probably not want to eat it - which would be the case if they thought about how animals were slaughtered anyway.
