No excuse for that at all, but the one thing that stops me from completely condemning him is the way he is the only one who really gets blasted and hated for his treatment of Gary which means the others treatment of him gets diluted and not talked about much.
Examples: The way Ricci told him he was dirty and disgusting. The way Stephanie stamped her foot and yelled over him and sniggers when he is being 'told off'. The way Dee tells him not to touch the pizza with his hands, and tells the other HM's not to worry, she'll wash Gary's clothes separately as if he's a leper. The way George also speaks to him in the same patronizing way James does and says he didn't think he was coming into an old peoples home.
If Ricci thinks he is dirty and disgusting, how does he behave around Gary that we don't see? And the others I mentioned too. They seem to just stay out of his way and treat him like a bad smell under their nose, but because James actually bothers to interact with him he gets the brunt of it all.
Not excusing his behaviour at all, it's uncalled for, but remember that many of the others as as bad in their own way and we'd probably see it if they actually took any time to be with him.

All those other things do get talked about, but James acts aggressive in all of his conversations, not just with Gary.
