the housemates have every right to see it as rude, they're the ones living with him and they're the ones experiencing it first hand.. if you pardon the pun.

Personally i would rather someone raise their hand when i am speaking to them if they cant hear me or understand me because they have hearing difficulties.
If it was someone who had full hearing then yes it can be rude.
