Rubbish. It's still by far safer than most places in the world. You have more chance of being attacked in the UK.

Well that's because it's NONSENNSSEEE...

*ahem*

Having quickly looked it up, Thailand has a murder rate of 5 per 100,000 people whilst the UK has a murder rate of 1 per 100,000 people.

Interestingly though, the US has a murder rate of 4.7 per 100k so roughly the same as Thailand - though obviously all of this depends on city / region wherever you are (for example, although the UK is 1/100,000... the City of Glasgow is 2.8/100,000).

Also, Detroit bumps up the US rate all on its own with a somewhat stunning 48/100,000. I remembered this one because a few years ago when an ex Police Chief from Detroit was called in by Glasgow police as a consultant, he pointed out that in one year there were more murders in Detroit than in the entire UK.

For the purposes of weighing up holiday destinations, though, you're more "at risk" going to New York (6.7), Los Angeles (7.8) or of course Orlando Florida, home of Disney, (11.0)... than Thailand.

what about murder rates specifically for tourists/vacationers though?

I imagine most of those murder rates for US cities are very specific neighborhoods related to gang warfare, and specific ethnic groups, not general population or tourists.

True, I was thinking of LA that the figure will be inflated by gang killings. I imagine murder rates in Hollywood are pretty low. Unless you count unhinged celebs. That's presumably true everywhere, though... e.g. Glasgow is classed as the "most dangerous city in the UK" but the city center is very modern and safe - it's just that the city has some... questionable... outlying residential zones.

I mean on the holiday island, not the whole country.

Yea i agree with you. statistics make too many generalizations. Most people that live in cities know where the dangerous parts are, and usually the dangerous parts are very isolated.

There are even apps now that you can download and will tell you which neighborhoods to stay away from in any city.

of course some guardianistas objects and say it's a racist app. lol I read the guardian everyday, but still it makes me hate the far left. They make such ridiculous arguments sometimes.

I consider myself to be moderate left wing. the far left annoys me just as much as the far right, actually the far left annoys me more because they should know better.

Tourists get murdered everywhere you buffoon, the only reason this had made news is because they are British people. That island is not known for being dangerous. Given some of Thailand can be but not there.

Let's just say that extremism in either corner is a very bad thing, thank god the UK has never elected such extreme parties while I've been alive.

And aren't the Police suspecting that it's a British backpacker?

This is the second story I've heard about British tourists being killed in Thailand the other being the one about the two boys who were followed coming home from a pub.

I've travelled quite a lot in Thailand, was only in Kho Tao and Kho Phangan last December, and an attack like this seems alien to what I've experienced of the Thai nature. Having said that, there are always aberrations...whoever is responsible, they have brought sadness to the hearts of many, obviously the families, but also to everyone that loves the peace and beauty of the Thai culture. Absolutely shocking and heart-rending.
