Ukip jeers during Liz McInne's victory speech
Labour has held Heywood and Middleton after Liz McInnes was elected as the constituency's new MP.

Speaking after the result, Ms Innes was booed by Ukip supporters, who lost by on 617 votes, as she declared that only Labour would protect the NHS.

Pathetic cretins, so glad they lost.

Well done, great result for UKIP the first of many I'm sure. Can feel the Political sands shifting as I write this.

Labour blaming UKIP for losing votes, Tories blaming UKIP for losing votes, Lib Dems only blame Nick Clegg for losing votes.

It can't all be down to UKIP can it ?

Maybe if the established parties actually listened to what the GBP actually want and didn't just treat us all like fools, then maybe parties like UKIP would remain small fringe party's.

But UKIP is on the rise and that Political Earthquake is just round the corner.

The Labour vote actually held up okay in Heywood and Middleton, after all the won the seat and UKIP did not, it is all very well to storm into 2nd place in elections but that doesn't win the seat.
The results tonight would see a Labour Govt elected, and UKIP still unlikely to take any Labour seats.

However, as by elections go, these are more important because it is a 4th party who have in effect won the greatest results tonight namely UKIP.
I hope the voters wake up however and realise if they really care about the NHS that although it is true, the Conservatives cannot be trusted with that, the other fact is that UKIP cannot be trusted with it even moreso than the Conservative party.

When the general election comes, in both by election seats, with a larger turnout in 2015, then there will be a likely move towards both Labour in Heywood and Middleton and to the Conservatives in Clacton.
However I now don't see the Conservatives regaining Clacton and I also feel they could lose the other by election to come too.

Congratulations to UKIP on these results but I do hope the voters think very hard again in 2015 as to risking voting for them.
Equally, the other parties, Labour included, need to connect much more with the voters and stop taking voters for granted.
Their namecalling and petty squabbling doesn't help and for as long as Nigel Farage is leading UKIP,they are going to gain success in elections.

I read into the results last night that Conservative voters are turning away more than the polls suggest.
For Labour their voters have said, we are with you still but only just,we need more from you.

I hope Clacton is the last major UKIP success, for me it is unfortunate that UKIP have an MP now.
Having said that, I am not that sure we do have 4 party politics, if UKIP have risen firmly and these sort of votes are not a temporary thing, then really the Lib Dems are out of the main race at present and may not be in a position to be termed a 'main' party, ending up with minority status.
They did shocking in both by election results for a Party in shared Govt for the last 4 and half years.

Nigel Farage to his credit does connect with voters,he cannot be in 650 seats in a general election but definitely full credit to him for his efforts in securing the Clacton victory yesterday.

Nigel did will this morning bearing in mind he had no sleep!

In stark contrast was the woeful display by Grant Shapps MP - Conservative Party Chairman who was on earlier and literally read from his party line crib sheet by starting every reply with "well Ed Milliband" and banging on about vote UKip and get labour in yada yada - its the same scare politics they used in Scotland and it stinks - vote for who you feel represents your views, period.

Useless pillock

I used to like Grant Schapps LeatherTrumpet but in the role he has now he just comes across as plain daft as to what he is expected to say.

He just doesn't get,as neither does most of the Conservative party, that in their statements of 'vote UKIP, get Ed Miliband',the voters are not even listening because of one reason, they certainly don't want the Conservatives led by David Cameron either.

I still see a Labour 2015 election win after these by elections but I do agree, they are too surprisingly losing votes to UKIP, I'd say it is the former Lib Dem voters who went back to Labour that are now, in the main, keeping the party ahead.

The 2015 election is I feel sure going to throw up some really wild results and I do also believe UKIP will be a major factor and are here to stay at least for that election anyway.

have you had time to listen to Carswell's speech last night, very interesting in terms of his future role at Ukip and its possible direction?

Actually he would likely make a good leader of UKIP when Nigel Farage decides to stand down.
I liked Douglas Carswells point about him feeling he can now do what he came into politics to do.

he won, really well too, good luck to him in that.

I understand all the news channels tried to get a comment but there was no one at LibDem HQ willing to talk to the press. I imagine they were all too busy sobbing into handkerchiefs or redoing their CVs.
