Pretty much any action he proposes against Isis or Ebola will have to be put through Congress and the Senate. He can't just wave a magic wand and solve the issue and the Republicans will do anything they can to discredit him and the Democrats in order to give them a shot at the next election. Democrats control the White house but the majority of the Senate and (I believe) Congress are currently Republicans. Issues come to a standstill because of this.

This is awful. Republicans are worse than UKIP and some of their policies are downright revolting and outdates. I'm very saddened, I thought America had changed.

That's true, but I'm not american so it's not my fault. Politically, the democrats are superior.

^ I think you're sort of conflating the UK and US political systems. Saying the Republicans are worse than Ukip doesn't mean much really considering they will have to confront very different issues in very different ways. Also 'the Republicans' are nowhere near as monolithic as a British political party tends to be, there is a hugely wide spectrum within that grouping and policies tend to be more personal to individuals than a party as a whole. Sure there may be some broad set of 'Republican values' (fiscal responsibility, small government, strong families etc.) but it'd be very possible to find a Republican with more in common with some Democrats than his fellow Republicans.

Obama to most Americans is simply a man who promised much and delivered little. It was always going to be hard to live up to the expectations that he set himself when he was rushed into power on a wave of hope which had little substance, but for a lot of his time in office he's just been seen as dithering and weak if not plain incompetent. You don't need to be an intolerant ranting Republican to think that, a lot of his party have also turned against him and in these mid terms they lost some crucial Democratic strongholds and even Obama's home state of Illinois. I think he's lucky both that the Republicans couldn't field a strong candidate in 2012 (they still might not have one for 2016 either) and that his Presidency is coming to an end because I don't think the Democrats would win another Presidency with him at the helm.

He's been on a third as many holidays as Bush so not sure what your point is here.

He's far too weak to slap the republicans like he should be doing. They have blocked his appointments, gutted Obamacare when they can even though most constituents are better off with Obama care and the biggest insult is that many Dem candidate ran on the policy that they are trying to distance themselves from Obama. How stupid why move closer to the right when there is already a candidate that is ultra right wing. Few Dem ran on his great employment record, his foreign policy achievements and Obamacare most want nothing to do with him.

Can anybody with a keen eye on American politics explain how the two parties ended up the way they are?

I've been listening to an American Civil War podcast and during that time the Democrats are portrayed as the Southern based slavery advocating party and the Republicans are the more progressive anti-slavery party with huge Union support. I would have thought the opposite given the way the parties seem to behave now.

The republican party was known as the Democratic Party back then, who were pro-slavery.

The democrats, same name they have now, were against it and represent more centre/left whereas republicans would be between right-wing and far-right.

What foreign policy achievements? He's been a bit of a failure there whichever way you look at it. Depending on your view he's either continued an aggressive American foreign policy; ploughing more troops into Afghanistan, far increasing the number of drone strikes from Bush's government, bombing Libya which is now in chaos and going back into Iraq. Or he's been impotent and weak, backtracking numerous times on Syria, backtracking on ISIS, failing to assert America's influence in the Middle East.

There is very little which reflects well on Obama's foreign policy so I don't see why any Democrats would try and run based on that

I was mostly referring to closing gitmo, and killing Bin Laden. I do agree with you on his apparent weakness abroad.

He hasn't closed it though? 6 years since he made that promise and its still open. Bin Laden's killing is I suppose something that went down well with most Americans, but it all seems fairly futile now with the rise of IS, Islamic extremism was never going to die with Bin Laden

My bad, I thought I read a report saying it had been closed.
