Good to see this News story, hope there are a hundred more just like it or even worse to come out from now to the election.

Eek! Eeeeek! Help! 300,000?? That's an army! Do you have any idea how many dogs all of those immigrants will eat? None of our pets will be safe NONE of them I say! Plus latest statistics suggest that 299,997 of those immigrants are Muslims who have been genetically engineered to have highly explosive blood. If they start mingling with the general population and then someone lights a match? Boom, guys. Game over. Game ****ing over. AND that's not to mention the fact that, unlike us in the UK, immigrant fetuses have a gestation period of only 3 weeks instead of 9 months. Immigrant women have, on average, 27.9 children meaning that each family has an annual benefits bill of 1.72 million pounds. Think they'll be required to seek work? THINK AGAIN. All immigrants are deemed unfit for work, as where we Brits have hands, immigrants only have razor-sharp claw-like growths (and lack opposable thumbs).

Three hundred freaking thousand. Ladies and gentlemen, this truly is the end of days. Christians, grab your bibles. Jews, grab your... the first part of the bible(?). Jehovah's Witnesses, return to your homes and lock the doors. Atheists, just grab your balls and hold on for dear life. War is upon us. Each and every man, woman and child may be called upon to fight for our homes, for our lives, for our very souls at ANY given moment. To be perfectly frank - our battle will be futile - but what choice do we have? And let me ask you, will you die on your knees, or will you go down swinging?? I say we fight! I say we take to the streets in anger! I say we prepare a great HORSE with WINGS OF FIRE and GATLING GUNS attached to its mighty flanks, and we mount Nigel Farage upon that horse, and we go with him into the very heart of London and ask - nay, we DEMAND - that next year, Immigration be no more than 250,000. We can do this!

In a small country of around 65 million people, 300,000 is a lot in a year. I have no problem with people with skills coming here, I have no problem with genuine asylum seekers. but there is finite space and finite resources. Our infrastructure is already overstretched.

I'm not one to panic about the country being overflown with immigrants any time soon and I don't have any strong opinions about the current system, I'm not overly fussed so long as they come here to work or invest, which I reckon the large majority probably do. Equally, however, I've never understood why people are labelled as racist for wanting to move to a skill based system like Canada or Australia. It seems sensible enough to me (so long as the intentions of the person suggesting it are in the right place). I'd love to move to Canada but know it's unlikely that will ever happen as I don't have a skill they demand, that doesn't mean Canada is full of racists!!

That being said I'd never vote UKIP, I don't think the situation is anywhere near as urgent as it would have to be to justify a party like them gaining any kind of power.

Lets have some perspective

We need an inward stream of immigrants to fund our current pension demands, we can't have things both ways

It is a side effect of europe, its not news, because we signed up to it many years ago and actively encourage it. If we want an insular society then vote to exit from europe and go back to border controls. My prediction however is that even if we did this, the immigrants would still come as we NEED them for our survival.

Yes but some of the hysteria... is really quite over the top, surely? Also worth pointing out - not sure why it hasn't been yet, unless I missed it - immigration is not "up 300,000" at all. It's gone up to (nearly) 300,000. It was, obviously, not previously zero. At the end of 2013, it's quite clear from the graph that immigration was at over 200,000. Immigration is actually up by around 90,000. The thread title and OP are a bit misleading, no?

Maybe... but whichever way you slice it up, the fact remains that immigration is high and getting higher. It's not sustainable.

Correct. We have an aging population (damned baby-boomers) and if our own people won't breed, then we simply HAVE to import. But then, everyone is also wailing about how "people shouldn't be having more than two kids that they can't afford ". Sooo... you can't have it both ways, basically. Either our own population needs to increase the birth rate, or we need migrants, OR we need to start euthanizing the elderly.

I'm not particularly opposed to any of those three options, to be fair... but y'know... people really need to pick one.

Of course we need migrants. But not in the numbers we're currently accepting them. Canada, Australia, all seem to be managing with ageing populations without accepting everyone who wants to live there, you have to be of some worth to them, have something to offer the country before you're accepted or be a genuine asylum seeker. I don't see that as a bad thing.

nope. even if a radical blows a person up for drawing a cartoon youre not allowed to talk about it freely without the word racist being bandied about. strangely though those who do the blowing up are never called racists?

So it's immigration affecting the NHS now... What about immigrant doctors and nurses, don't you want those either?
Can you imagine waiting times without them?

Steven Woolfe MEP, the UKIP Migration spokesman.

"The Government should be ashamed of its abject failure to keep control of the constantly rising numbers of those arriving here", he said.

"This Government's policy is fatally holed beneath the water line and is sinking fast.

"The figures show that 624,000 people arrived here in the past year alone. To put that into perspective that is equivalent to the populations of both Liverpool and Aberdeen combined.

"More significantly perhaps is the fact that the net migration figure was just under 300,000 people.

"This is a 42% increase on the year on year figures from last year. That's a city the size of Hull settling here in the last 12 months.

"No Government can rationally plan to build the services required to cope with these numbers. The schools, the hospitals, the houses, the roads cannot be provided at such a speed, the capital costs required are huge and burden on the taxpayer will be even more strained.

"The Government has planned for failure by deceiving themselves and the country that they could keep these figures down to their infamous idea of "tens of thousands".

"During the course of this parliament, the Government has seen more than a million incomers settle permanently in the UK.

"According to the ONS there have been a "statistical significant" increase under every matrix they use including net long term migration, overall immigration, family reunions, national insurance numbers registered, and those coming here for employment and study.

Mr Woolfe continued, "Migration is one of the top concerns going into this election and it is clear that UKIP is the only party trusted to deal with it.

"We will set a cap on the number of people permitted to work and reside in the UK by introducing a fairer, and more transparent points based system ensuring we get the skilled immigrants we need and in numbers that the economy can manage."

I think it is time something was done to stem the flow.
We do need immigrants to do the jobs we can't fill.
Perhaps we should have a points system for Europe, and also encourage more of our young people to train for skilled work, then encourage the unskilled people on the benefits to do the unskilled work.
If only life was that simple.
