I agree but these are a few reasons I've seen posted for why people think he's going up :

He's coming up the stairs. If he was coming down the walls behind him would be vertical to meet the ceiling! & they're not.

Photo taken from the top looking down so cat is going up.

The cat is going up! The ground is immediately at the bottom step in the background. You wouldn't have a wall at the top of a set of stairs. The raised lip is a grip on the upper side of the step. The cat's tail isn't raised high enough for balancing if it was going down the stairs.

Oh and a neither :

Neither! They've superimposed a cat on a set of stairs that are an optical illusion! Look at cats front left leg... His paw is in wrong place for either up or down... That's a picture of a cat walking on flat!

..I love Escher as well, Anaesthesia..he's one of the artists I studied in my school years/it's quite tricky to draw though...if you like stuff like this, I think there is a thread in the General Interest section, I'll bump it so that you can look through it and maybe post some stuff yourself...

I think that the Cat is going up, as the floor behind him looks too low down for it to be the upper part imo.
