As for Joel's sexuality, yes during auditions when we spoke I did question it, but ultimately it's important to take his word for it, in such a situation. If he's telling Aaron he's 'straight', then Aaron should respect that, instead of trying to use his homosexuality as a shield to speak to Joel in the way in which he did.

Joel was present for the conversation and was okay with the conversation topic, so I don't think Aaron overstepped. Had Joel not been there and Aaron make comments like that, then, yes, I would agree that it was in bad taste.

Joel's sexuality being a talking point isn't a bad thing, because no one is using it against him. Joel says he's straight, then he might be, but speculating otherwise isn't inappropriate unless it's being used against him. And in this case, it isn't. People want this relationship to happen, so I don't feel like Aaron isn't using his sexuality as a shield... (what does that mean?)

I know you have met Joel and you have a better grasp of him than I do, but I just don't feel like Aaron is in the wrong as he isn't forcing his sexuality on him.
