It is getting him in the highlights Mock, as you say.
I would hope Joel would feel he could easily say if it bothered him too much anyway, and tell him to stop.
However that can often help make things worse depending on how rational or not, the other person is.

When someone keeps at you,they often can be so totally ignorant they take no notice or get very nasty were they to be told they were causing any offence, or bothering someone.

Joel perhaps is handling it rather well in those circumstances,despite maybe really smouldering inside and wanting to really let fly.
