This is right. She's looking to drag him into an argument, but wanted the audience to perceive it as
him starting an argument with her. She falsely accused him of accusing her of dancing on Adjoa's grave, then when he confronted her on her accusation, said "don't
start with me." She later (in her conversation with him in the bedroom) expressed frustration that he lowered his tone rather than meeting her aggression with aggression of his own. She was forced to retreat into her "I was just joking. You can't take a joke," before scurrying off to the back yard to solidify her political support against him with Harriet and the other females.
His fundamental good nature is protecting him from being dragged into an ugly argument with her.
