Irish here, from roughly the region Mark is from. It is not a racist term here. It has racial origins but hasn't had racist connotations in common usage for over a decade. Personally I avoid the word because of it's history but Mark's usage had absolutely no racial connotations. The word literally doesn't mean member of the traveling community to him, or me.
