Default Subjects that people tend to avoid?

Mental illnesses come to mind. Literally for the two years I was suffering with a disorder, nobody in my family would dare mention it to me. They'd just say, "how are you feeling, in yourself?"

Partially, I was in and out of hospital for a while and when I wasn't, I was expected to just look after myself (which I couldn't).
