Oh so it's fine she makes tips but not to tip yourself? Ask her what her wage would be without tips and she would be broke.

An inconvenience would be making you stay behind after your meal to wash your own dishes, giving a poorly paid person who works their ass off most nights of the week, waiting hand and foot on people, who a lot of the time will be rude and irritating, is not an inconvenience, it's a nice thing to do for someone who works incredibly hard and it probably makes their day to receive a good tip.

I always leave tips(only if the service was great obvs) If I had no cash on me and only had my card I always go to the bank to get cash out and then go to the shop to get change. It's a really nice thing to do.

i never tip if there is a service charge already included.

If you eat out regularly, it pays dividends to tip. It will get you better service, tables without booking etc etc. One time I went to a restaurant without booking, and the owner turfed people out the restaurant so I could get a table

Well I gave flowers/chocolates to the nurses who looked after me and the people who operated on my finger because they did a good job.

I can't give supermarkets tips because a machine doesn't take them.

I tip loads tbf

so if the food is crap the waiter gets no tip and if its good he or she does get good tips

both situations are beyond their control as they dont make food

and cooks may get more basic but with tips a waiter may earn more overall

I tip waiting staff if the service has been good unless a service charge is included in the bill. When the service is bad I don't tip, if there has been a service charge included, I deduct it.

"Restaurant servers rely on tips for survival, but a growing number of critics are pointing out that the system is flawed.

The standard tip on dinner checks is now as much as 25%, reports Venessa Wong at Bloomberg Businessweek.

But while upscale servers can earn good money, the cooks who prepare the food make minimum wage.

Restaurateur Michael Chiarello, who owns Bottega in Manhattan, said that his servers make up to $90,000 a year through tips, while cooks earn close to minimum wage. "

I always leave a tip because they do a great job, are basically at your beckon call throughout your time in the restaurant etc.

I give taxi drivers a tip when I use them but that's rare.

I give delivery men and workmen at my house a fiver and sometimes at xmas I also give them some cans or bottles of beer.

I give takeaway delivery drivers a tip every time.

If any of my family members or close friends are in hospital I always hand in some flowers or a box of chocolates or biscuits into the nurses station when they are getting home.

Because it's nice to be nice and these people all do a good job

I send it back, pay for what I've had... usually drinks... and leave. I'm not having a full service so I don't tip.

Better service doesn't actually beget better tips

Diners love the power to bestow or withhold financial reward at their whim; servers, in turn, seem to be motivated by the idea that really excellent service could be rewarded by a monster gratuity. The trouble is, that's not actually how things pan out in practice. Michael Lynn, a professor at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, has spent his career researching tipping behaviors, and found that perceived service quality only accounts for two percent of the variation between tips. Two percent! It's probably not even enough to be picked up on by the server, much less cause a significant change in behaviour.

binman is apparently a good paid job and so it should be, and i hardly ever see them.

I gave a flight attendant £5 before because I found her pretty (I was 7) but I would give a flight attendant tips because they try and make you have a good flight.
