Did anyone ever really take piers seriously as a judge though? I love him and I loved him on the show, but he had no clue what he was talking about the majority of the time really

If this is an open question, I'd invite you to look at Louis Walsh' back catalogue of basic, mildly offensive, irritatingly overused 'catchphrases' to find true annoyance.
