Cheryl and Rita are both now celebrities who happen to have music careers. The problem is that the UK doesn't produce popstars in the vein of American popstars so measuring them against each other is stupid - Jess Glynne has never done a choreographed performance in her life like Britney Spears but obviously the former would sing circles round the latter. The UK's all about the voice and the look rather than the performance artist spectacle and look so America brings out incredible all rounders who are the best at everything and that is celebrated and supported; whereas the UK is all about being a bit rough around the edges, we like to support the underdog, we like a bit of vulnerability and humility... it's why someone like Cher Lloyd is reviled in the UK for being up herself and cocky but managed to make some waves in the US for being confident and believing in herself... unfortunately, she can't dance and she's not that hot so she was never going to sell too well.

I mean, really, when have we ever produced a Beyonce or a Pink, somebody worth supporting for over a decade?

I think with Cheryl though, when she joined the x factor she suddenly became a household name (which she wasn't before even with the success of girls aloud) and she was branded 'the nations sweetheart' etc, and people just fell in love with her a bit because she came across really well, and all of that gave her solo career a massive boost on it's launch. Whereas Rita's situation is different, in terms of where her careers at but also in that the X Factor doesn't have the same influence it did when Cheryl joined, and just personality wise, she's very different to Cheryl. So I'm not saying that a judging role will always give someone a leg up in the industry, I just think that specifically with Cheryl it did.

I actually think Cher Lloyd calmed down, her 2nd album was much way mature but it flopped, is which a shame because it's better than her 1st album which did respectfully well.

I don't think the UK is alone in not producing any superstars. The US also hasn't produced a female popstar with star power since Gaga/Katy came out in 2008. Ariana is showing signs of fading already and Demi/Selena are kinda underperforming

grammy's and stones remains the best, it also debuted in the top 10 on the billboard 200, from the top of my head it's only been her and 1D being the only non-winners from UK XF to achieve that

Ariana had a slight misstep, I don't think she's fading whatsoever. Demi and Selena have never really 'made it' and I don't think they ever will but Selena seems to be getting a bit of traction over in the US so who knows. If Miley stops being weird she might return to knocking on the door of being in the A list... and I'd say that Taylor Swift's mammoth album campaign this year would be an example of a US star made this year - she's had hits before but this was her most successfull, all conquering era. The US is where superstars are made.

Meghan Trainor did quite well this year in terms of US stars but neither her nor ariana are on the same level as gaga/katy were when they launched initially in 2009

Katy wasn't so instant though, in fact I'd say she wasn't really big until her Teenage Dream campaign whereas Gaga was pretty instant... as much as nobody seems to want to like her, Meghan Trainor has burst onto the scene whereas Ariana's slowly built up to becoming a big name...

Yes Ariana can pull it back with a cute second single. Releasing Focus was a bad idea. I do think if Selena and Demi were to 'make it' they would have already done so, it's not as if they've lacked promo or hits the public just aren't here for them

I agree with the BIB. There's lots of artists who are big in the UK/Europe but it's when you break America you know you've truly made it
