Actually, I'm not sure about Ireland but we've had our insurance premiums put up now because men thought we were getting more favourable treatment and had a little whine about it. Instead of them getting cheaper insurance, ours was increased.

It killed Sheila's Wheels...

Actually, the stats are sort of in favour of women being "worse" (less skilled) drivers (due to less spacial awareness) but men are more aggressive drivers. Women are more likely to have "fender-benders" type bumps and scrapes causing minor cosmetic damage, whereas when men have accidents they tend to be down to recklessness and therefore more likely to cause significant damage to vehicles / other property, which is of course more expensive, hence the higher insurance. Same reason that it costs more for teens / early 20's, even compared to brand-new drivers who are older. Kids (especially teenage boys) get over-confident on winding roads and end up flipping their car / putting it through a metal fence... which is usually going to be a "several thousand Ł write off" situation rather than a "Ł200 new bumper" situation.

Women's is still cheaper though, my wife's is a good 30% less than mine in identical circumstances. I thought what killed Sheila's Wheels was being told that they couldn't be exclusively for women, and had to offer insurance for anyone...

Which I don't really understand, either. Surely they should be able to offer insurance to whoever they want

Sounds about right

I used to think it was sexist but its proven that women have less accidents than men so I would say the cheaper premiums were probably fair. Kinda ike those who have a few years no claims get it cheaper.

And of course other peoples wouldn't be lowered...but they will be happy aslong as people who were getting it a bit cheaper have to pay more. Quite spiteful that mind :S

To be fair, every female driver having higher insurance premiums is surely worth it to be rid of those adverts...

Pity about the "bonza" deals though.

All in general, of course. There are some brilliant women drivers and some awful male drivers. My best friend wrote off a car by hitting a lamp-post whilst trying to reverse it round a roundabout

It's more like a "catch" I guess. Like they can imply refusal by being like "Hi Mary! Your insurance quote is Ł450. Bob, yours is... err... Ł20,000."

Me and my lad watched a woman yesterday grind the **** out of her gears trying to find reverse and then back into a wall and smash her bumper. He loved it.Saw his very first car crash. He would'nt stop talking about it all day.Women drivers do have that entertainment factor i suppose.

For the sake of balance - the first car crash I ever saw, I was in the car, age 17 with one of my mates driving . Classic "young guy" crash like I said too - over-confident on a country road, going too fast, understeered on a corner that was sharper than he thought and put us into a field. Wrote off his mum's car and gave me whiplash, the bastard...

I know, I'm not one for generalising at all really, my moms husband has to be one of thee worst drivers I ever came across but my husband is probably one of the best, so there you go my best and worst drivers awards go to men

..the worst driver awards tend to go to men a bit more often though, hence why females aren't allowed to pay less car insurance based on gender alone but they still often pay a lower insurance..( so based on them being better drivers I'm presuming..).....

Yeah.Men are just as bad tbf.I once reversed into my parents driveway at 30mph and took the side of my car off(a car given to me by my dad).I also was a passenger in a car after playing footy and the lad driving pulled out in front of a car and we ended up at the other side of the road.Luckily i was on the opposite side to where the car hit.

Oh yeah.I also wrecked a very nice car i had by crashing into a taxi whilst texting.I was young.

I'd never had an accident until a drunk hit me last year. A drunk man, may I add...

It has a lot to do with driving profiles too. Typically, many more men spend their days travelling up and down motorways etc. The more time you are on the road, the more the likelihood you will have an accident ... Simple statistics
