He's obviously still deciding on what direction the series is going in before announcing a theme. He probably doesn't even know it yet.

Coven was a bit messy but I liked it. Freakshow and Hotel really dragged the show down. The cast really needs to be stripped back, we need a smaller cast so there can be more character development.

There's just been too much of a cast for Freakshow/Hotel, to the point that when characters died I couldn't care less because they've had little screen time. Not the best way to run a show that only (usually) has those characters for 13 episodes.

Coven still had a main plot with (somewhat) of an ending, even if lots of threads and non starts to stories were scattered around.

Hotel was just a massive mess with no story to speak of.

Tbf, with Hotel characters dying usually meant more screen time as a ghost.

Thanks to one of our tipsters, we’ve learned one of the scenes they are filming this week is set in a nursing home/hospital type setting. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to divulge many details so it’s still unclear if this has to do with the show’s overall theme. It would be surprising if it did because Murphy has said he had two ideas for the show’s theme and both had to do with children.
