Why is he thick for not knowing a word that is rarely used outside movies? You do realise Hughies education was probably erratic due to his upbringing?

He's thick.....he is always asking people the most stupid question and doesn't know the meaning of half the English vocabulary....which makes him thick.
That's why he cannot discuss....he just shouts and gets aggressive..it's the natural reaction of someone with an inability to string a sentence together and discuss!!!

And thats suppose to justify his barking at people in order to get his point across? Was he barred from picking up a book and reading it as a child? It doesn't even have to be a book, a magazine will do just to expand ones vocabulary. He's been raised by a television, the poor guy. No wonder he failed the spelling task so miserably.

Hughies poor education isn't the housemates fault though....we all meet people more educated or more sophisticated or more eloquent than ourselves but we don't scream at them because of it. If he shouted a little less and listened a little more he may actually start to learn something and become more educated.
I can understand how frustrated and diminished he must feel if he's had disadvantages in his life but none of those things are the fault of his housemates.

...it's funny how we 'take into consideration..' when we like/connect with someone and not so much when we don't, I'm sure we all do it to an extent...for someone who has had so many more advantages of education in his life than Hughie and for someone who apparently has such passion for the struggles of minority groups...Andy of all people in the house should have an understanding of Hughie and how disrespectful he constantly is to Hughie...but alas he really does show the greater 'ignorance' of the two in his unwillingness to ever listen...

..in thinking about it, I don't believe that Andy would be so completely dismissive and ignorant as he is to someone like Hughie and his disadvantages and prejudices against him in his life...for his sexuality, for being part of the travelling community, how hard it must have been to 'fit in' at school etc....and especially him being a journalist and all... an apparent 'insightful' person...a 'well educated' person...a 'mix with anyone', type person...I think his 'intelligence' just knows who he feels the biggest threats are in the house and that's how he perceives Hughie more than anything else...
