It would have distressed and confused the dog more if he had made a fuss of it and it then had to be taken away after, what he did was sensible and sensitive to the dogs wellbeing in the long run. I've always had dogs and I know if I'd been in the same situation it would have distressed them more to see me and then be taken away.
