Default USA: Houston Metro Officer Resigns After Beating Black Man at Rail Station

Officer Jairus Warren, who joined Metro in November, tendered his resignation after an internal investigation determined he should be fired for use of excessive force. The incident was captured on Metro's surveillance cameras used at all train platforms.

"You will see excessive force being used on the video," said Vera Bumpers, chief of the Metropolitan Transit Authority Police.

Warren and another officer, D. Reynoso, approached Darrell Giles around 7:30 a.m. It was not the officers' only contact with Giles, Bumpers said.
"They had dealt with him a couple of times earlier that morning," she said. "He was combative and was not cooperative on any occasions."

Well done to the Police for rooting out the bad apples and it shows that their systems to protect the public are working

The police do an excellent job of policing their own thorough investigation of evidence and not hysterical pitchfork jabbing via social media

The explanation is simple, there was an annoying fly that the officer was trying to discourage with his baton, and the guy just happened to be in the way

Exposed...the term is exposed.

Social media has been an excellent tool for bringing bad practice to public attention.

False perception? they see acts of extreme violence and murder for which the 'perps' who happen to be the very people tasked with upholding the law are accused yet rarely brought to justice... That evokes a reaction and rightly so, nobody is above the law.

very naive kizzy, they see snippets of edited video and then use conjecture and prejudice to come to ridiculous opinions and act as online lynch mobs

this is why courts and law was invented in the first place for humans

Coming from someone naive enough to think that officers are somehow incapable of breaking the law themselves that's laughable.

I know a little bit about the people involved in this case, but I can only say there wasn't any history prior to this. The guy jumped at him in the video so I can understand his initial reaction to retaliate, but looks like he let it get personal and went too far. Looks like there may have been some backtalk going on in the video.

The Sheriff's Office too recently (not related to Metro Police) has just installed a new camera system in the detention center which they used to suspend 3 officers who went too far in the clinic. Either family tipped off sheriff and they checked the video or they caught it as part of an internal investigation which led to them announcing the suspensions.

Either way, I think it's the right call. They need to set examples so that certain people know there are consequences to going overboard on the job. Sadly any position that offers power over other individuals is going to attract certain types of corrupt individuals.

My grandmother (the wife of a career law enforcement officer) used to say that this field attracts two types of individuals... the type who for the right reasons and are dedicated... and then those who are it in for the power the job for the power. Most people don't usually join it for the money and to support a luxurious lifestyle...unless they want to go to the political/administrative route I guess... which is a lot more ass-kissing than butt-kicking.

Unedited too. Suppose he didn't get the same protection as his white corrupt colleagues. At least it was just a beating and not actually shooting. And he has the decency to resign. White cops expect paid leave during investigation and accept with no shame and expect to be put back into force.

A cop shot an epileptic black man today, what's your view?
