Apparently the premiere title is "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be". I was hoping for "Something to Fear" but it's a nice callback to the season 1 finale.

I read something a while ago about how the channel big-wigs and those making the show essentially have no plans to end its run in the foreseeable future... so really it could run for a LOT of seasons. Most likely dependent on the key actors, tbh, which really would only be Rick, Daryl and Michonne, MAYBE Carol. I think they could safely remove anyone else, so long as new and well-liked characters had already been introduced to fill the gap.

I honestly think the cast are all dispensable. Andrew Lincoln and Chandler Riggs are probably the only cast members the show needs.

They could easily stray from the comic source material and go in a different direction and so long as it's well written it'll stay the titan of a show it's become.

Daryl's fan base is so huge that killing him off could easily kill viewing figures to the point that they'd have to stop making it... I actually think they could easily kill off Carl without it affecting the fan base much. Rick they really can't kill off; he's not even the most popular character, but he's so central to the story that it would feel a bit hollow / pointless to carry it on.

Daryl is very popular (still don't get why) but I'd like to think the show can continue without him. Nobody who isn't Rick should ever essentially be guaranteed safety (and certainly not somebody who hasn't even had a storyline since Season 3, and no I don't class him being shoehorned into the Beth story as one).

I'm sure he will be around for a long while yet though because they're too scared to kill him off (which is ridiculous for a show that should always have high stakes).

I think the SHOW could easily survive and still be great, as in I don't think it would ruin the show at all and as you say maybe even improve it by showing that "no one is really safe" again. What I don't have faith in is audiences and networks... there is a decent chunk of the "Daryl fan" audience who would tune out if he was written out and networks are so twitchy that a sudden ratings drop can easily end up with a premature cancellation.

This is why I'm pleased that a lot of the best original scripted shows are starting to go digital / streaming now. If TWD was a Netflix exclusive then I'd be totally convinced that Daryl will be Negan's victim. It would have the biggest impact by a mile, both on audience and characters. But on network telly he's safe.
