Your second paragraph is naive beyond belief. Trump is trying to reppeal the affordable healthcare act so the act of having a baby would result in a lot of medical bills, are you saying it's a good idea to force women into debt just to have a baby that they don't want that will likely grow up in a harsh system? It's highly ironic that you call pro-choice people immoral considering.... Last edited by Tom4784; 25-01-2017 at 12:26 PM. |

In the UK the time limit for abortion is 24 weeks.Although i'm all for people having the right to choose. After going to two 12 and 20 week scans it does make me uncomfortable that we allow abortions that late into a pregnancy.I do think the time limit should be drastically lower.

I do agree that the upper limit could be done with being lowered as I believe a child can survive at 24 weeks but I don't think it's a major issue since most abortions happen early on anyway.

Statistics from 2014 show that 92% of abortions were carried out under 13 weeks gestation, 80% were under 10 weeks.
A very low percentage of abortions were carried out late because of congenital malformations or risk to life of mother if the pregnancy continued. Abortions after 24 weeks was 0.1% I am all for pro choice, though I can’t agree with the feticide procedure unless there is risk to the life of the mother or proven major fetal malformations.

Just to be clear, 'feticide' is used in the medical profession for a type of procedure used for removing a fetus over 22 weeks. Its a word that is also used when women try to self abort a late term baby.

This is a good article :
In one simple quote, Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B. sums up the hypocrisy of many in the 'pro-life' movement: "I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is." This quote applies well to many Republican lawmakers who continue to introduce/pass restrictive misogynist laws against woman's reproductive rights. At the same time, the GOP works to shut down women's health clinics, with a special vengeance towards Planned Parenthood (#StandWithPP). You don't hear of these Right Wing anti-choice extremists adopting children from unplanned pregnancies or putting funds into sex education. But you do see Republican lawmakers cut access to birth control, which prevents abortions. You do see the GOP's 54 attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and their $24 Billion Government Shutdown both to destroy universal health reform which protects the needs of millions of American children. And you do see Republican lawmakers cut government programs like school lunches for children and block government financial aid to families who are homeless and/or in need. The goals of these so-called anti-choice/'pro-life' hypocrites are not about fetuses or children once born, their agenda is about controlling women's bodies and women's futures. How great to hear Sister Joan Chittister, a Benedictine nun, define the pro-life/anti-choice GOP double talk so well. An outspoken advocate for women, Sister Joan Chittister is a lecturer and author of 50 books. Holding a Ph.D. from Penn State University, she is also a research associate in a division of Cambridge University. Other subjects of her writing include women in the church and society, human rights, peace and justice, religious life and spirituality. She has appeared in the media on numerous shows including Meet the Press, 60 Minutes, Bill Moyers, BBC, NPR, and Oprah Winfrey. ![]() She's right, people have called abortion immoral in this thread yet they offer no solutions for the logistics of forcing childbirth on women. |

You can see it in any given conversation on this topic. The people who are quickest to shout about being pro-life are also the first to despair about "single mothers on benefits". It doesn't take a very complex equation to work out that making abortions illegal is going to result in a dramatic increase in single mothers who are unable to work.

There's plenty more reasons than just the mother not being healthy or her being raped. Financial issues, educational issues, being abandoned/no help from father, the fact that otherwise women just fall back into that neanderthal cycle of pregnancy and childbirth etc. What about the millions of babies/children that have been born and are living without families already?
