It's done out of respect for women, but some people choose to see it as sexist or unequal. The kind of men who pay for dates etc are usually the more respectful kind of men who want to demonstrate care and consideration to women, which is a good thing.

It's a debatable point for sure. Some people can see it as a compliment and a sign of a caring gentleman, others choose to see it as a sexist act which is being a bit harsh and ungrateful in the face of kindness IMO.
Oh don't get me wrong, I do think its a nice gesture, though personally I would argue to split the bill I don't blame people for letting the guy pay. Especially as many guys would take it as an insult if the girl wouldn't let them pay

I just think how its expected...and how guys get slagged for wanting to split (or even, gasp, let the girl pay if she wants to) is really wrong.
