Default Religious Extremism tries to pervert Education

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-42902864

This was an interesting story in the new today. While the headline/title of this thread is a bit dramatic, it's an interesting and thought provoking issue.

Should religious schools have more scrutiny upon them to make sure they are towing the line and not discriminating against girls or promoting extremism?

I don't agree with faith schools. Every child should have the same, academic education, a general religious education... and if they want to study their own religion they should do it in their own time.

I also don't agree with faith schools. I think the core of all major faiths should be taught in school but should come under 'history'

completely agree. Faith schools have no place in the modern world.

I don't believe in faith schools either but it's interesting to see how most of those responding feel the same way. I think that children should be allowed to be children and integrate in schools. It is the only way in my view to move forward as a multi race society.

But what will the likes of Ann Widdecombe blame their bigotry on in years to come without a background in religion?

Changed my mind on this.I went to a C of E school and had a very positive experience. No indoctrination and no religion in the actual education and i was never a Christian even during or after going there.I did think why not just let them exist as they are harmless and the more good schools the better.

However the small amount of Islamic faith schools who peddle extremism have ruined that.
If you take religion out of education then you have to do it accross the board otherwise it’s seen as singling out one religion.

So now i’m in the take religion out of education camp.

I agree totally . The school i went to prospective parents have to go to church for mths to get a place for their kids if they don't meet the requirements. RE was taught by the vicars from the church and we were frog marched to the church services for every conceivable occasion. I hated it .

I've heard this before, about people going to a C of E school and having a really positive experience. I wonder whether that is because the Church of England is quite progressive and inclusive compared to other faiths? There are C of E churches where vicars will marry you if you're gay, and will definitely bless your union if you're not. I got married in a C of E church, I would not have been allowed to marry I a synagogue because my husband wasn't Jewish. Sadly it's Christians a lot of the time who get the shtick, because there's little or no backlash if you're "calling them out on their archaic beliefs" but totally ignoring the other, less progressive religions for fear of offence. So I agree that some faith schools do a great job, I also agree that sadly, and as usual, we have to take the lead from those who are neither progressive nor inclusive and end faith schools completely.

Bigots don't need a book. There are millions of bigots out there with no faith at all.

Oh come on, I went to an all girls catholic school where we were taught that men were potentially evil predators. As a kid a nun threw holy water over us if we were naughty and told us we would burn for our evil deeds (like talking in class) and we really ****ing believed her.

And what about ultra Orthodox Jewish schools. Try reading up about them.

The whole premise of religion is to pervert education... Do you know what creationism is?

I agree, though there's a vast amount of history surrounding these ideologies. Wars, famine, executions, the rules of law and of course, conditioning of the way people have prospered according to their belief and how religions were altered to suit agendas. Then there's the relationship between one religion and another which would make for some healthy debate in the classroom.

Really? I went to a mixed school where there were a few nuns teaching, none of them acted like that, in fact they were fantastic teachers

I had a couple of nightmare teachers who were nothing to do with religion. They were just cruel, bitter people who hated kids. You don't have to go to a faith school to meet teachers who are obviously in the wrong job.

Exactly my point you can't really make sweeping generalisatiins on personal anecdotes, there are good and bad in every profession

No but I can give an example of what I saw and witnessed at my convent school or are you saying I shouldn't do that?
