Two men, aged 25 and 26 from Rome, are being held and are set to be quizzed by officers after the 53-year-old victim was critically injured

Two Roma fans have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a Liverpool fan was left fighting for life following an attack outside Anfield.


Police believe he was knocked to the ground with a belt during violent clashes that marred the game, which Liverpool won 5-2.

It is believed he is from the County Meath area of Ireland and travelled to the game with his brother.



Uefa are 'shocked by the incident' and could take further disciplinary action - while Roma

Police were called to the Albert pub at about 7.35pm, prior to the Champions League clash against Roma, following reports that the victim had been seriously assaulted.

Paramedics attended at the scene and the victim, who suffered a head injury, was taken to Walton Neurological Centre where his condition is described as 'critical.'

Shocking footage shared on Twitter by BBC Sports Editor Dan Roan shows a man lying on his back behind the Kop end at Anfield. A steward is seen making his way towards him and then tries to shield him from the violence.

Some accounts on social media suggested a home fan had been stabbed, but a Merseyside Police spokesman could not confirm this.

Detective Inspector Paul Speight said: “We believe the victim was in Liverpool, with his brother, for the Liverpool versus Roma semi-final and was assaulted during an altercation between Roma and Liverpool fans near to the Albert pub at about 7.35pm.

I honestly don't get how some people get so carried away over a Football match.

I love my team, but it would never enter my head to attack the QPR or Fulham fans if we were to lose to them over the next two weekends, and I'd hope that those fans would also show the same courtesy to me and other Blues fans.

Going back to these Roma fans, I hope that they're happy with what they've done as they'll be in jail for a long time, and maybe even got their own team into trouble.

I'm not sure these organised groups are even doing it for love of a football club mock, it seems like it's more the fight and adrenaline buzz that pushes them on
