The only thing I don't understand is, if the little one is going to die anyway, then why not just let the parents take him to Italy, if that's what they want to do?

Because it sets a precedent and everyone would want to start not accepting prognosis / raking their family out of hospitals... Causing huge disruption to the hospitals themselves, and undue suffering to people at the end of their lives.
