Michael Schumacher's family have allayed mounting fears about his condition by revealing they still "strongly believe" the former F1 World Champion will recover from the life-threatening skiing accident that has left him in a coma for almost two months.

Schumacher has been in a medically-induced coma at Grenoble Hospital since suffering severe head injuries whilst skiing with his family and friends in the French Alps at the end of December.

In an apparent response to alarming reports this week in Schumacher's native Germany that he had contracted pneumonia, a statement from the family - only the second public announcement from Schumacher's inner circle since January 17 - described the 45-year-old as still being in the 'waking up process'.

'Michael's family would like to again express their sincere thanks for the continuous sympathy coming from all over the world. The good wishes they receive help the family and, we are convinced they also help Michael, who still is in a waking up process,' the statement read.

'As often in such situation, no day is like the next. The family is thankful for one's understanding that they would not wish to disclose medical details in order to protect Michael's privacy. As assured from the beginning we will continue to communicate any decisive new information on Michael's health state. We are aware that the wake up phase can take a long time.

'The family continues to strongly believe in Michael's recovery and place all their trust in the doctors, nurses and nursing auxiliaries team. The important thing is not the speed of the recovery but that Michael's healing process progresses in a continuous and controlled way.'

It was announced two weeks ago that the sedation keeping Schumacher in his coma was being eased.

Despite repeatedly urging fans not to heed speculation about Schumacher's condition, a dearth of official updates has seen rumour and gossip flourish on social media sites, with the besieged Grenoble Hospital last week forced to deny claims that the former Ferrari and Mercedes driver had died.

The F1 fraternity has united in offering its support to Schumacher with both of his former teams running tributes to their ex-driver during the recent Jerez test.
Keep fighting.

Doctors battling to save F1 legend Michael Schumacher were today still trying to ease him out of his medically-induced coma after it was feared they had given up hope.

The seven-times world champion was still undergoing the long-term process of “waking up” despite claims they had abandoned the attempts.

Schumacher, 45, has been in an artificial coma since his Christmas skiing accident which has left him fighting for life.

But a German magazine quoted “insiders” saying doctors at the University of Grenoble Hospital in France had abandoned the attempts due to “complications”.

But the Formula One hero’s manager Sabine Kehm said after the reports were published the situation was “unchanged.”

Ms.Kehm said: “This phase can take a long time which, much to our regret, can lead to many misinterpretations.”

Schumacher has been receiving round-the-clock care after the French Alps accident which resulted in life-or-death injuries while out skiing with 14-year-old son Mark in Meribel where he owns a chalet.

Earlier today German magazine Focus claimed attempts to slowly revive him had been put on hold last week.

The report came only days after former team-mate Felippe Massa revealed he had visited Schumacher in hospital and spoken to him.

Brazilian Williams driver Massa said: “He was sleeping, and I was very positive because he was normal. He also gave some reactions with the mouth and everything.

“It looked very positive. We need to believe. He’s a very strong man, a great man and I really hope he can wake up and enjoy life again.”

Massa had visited his friend before heading off for F1 testing in Bahrain.

He added: “I was happy to be with him for a long time. I told him everything... about my car, my new team. I told him to wake up many times.”

Doctors announced three weeks ago they were reducing the anaesthetic keeping him under to slowly bring him around.

Massa added:“I was happy to be with him for a long time. I told him everything... about my car, my new team. I told him to wake up many times.”

The latest reports in Germany sparked fears complications had set in, possibly including reduced blood flow, a new infection or signals that the drugs lying in the fatty tissue of his body were not shifting as fast as they would have hoped.

Focus claimed the recovery phase was back on ice and Schumacher was once again medicated to keep him under.

Wife Corinna, 44, with whom he has two children Gina Marie, 16, and Mick 14, has remained at his bedside.

Last week French investigators closed the official inquiry into his accident, ruling out any criminal wrongdoing.

The accident occurred just over 14 feet from the edge of the ski run in an off-piste area.

Schumacher lost control when he hit a rock and ended up smashing his head into a bolder 34 feet further down the mountain.

But his family still “ strongly believe” he will recover.

Earlier this month they said it was not the speed of his recovery but that it progressed in a “continuous and controlled way”

Schumacher receives food through a tube to his stomach, oxygen via a hose from a machine next to his bed as he still cannot breathe independently. Three times daily his joints and muscles are massaged to prevent atrophy and bed sores.

The coma suppressed his swallowing reflex, pain perception and his respiratory drive. He has to be acutely monitored around the clock during this wake-up phase to see if such things are returning naturally - if at all.

His blood is also thinned to prevent thrombosis and he is regularly turned and even stood straight up at times to keep blood flowing. He lies on a special air-filled mattress to prevent pressure sores and his urinary tract is under constant vigilance because of the danger of waste bacteria entering the bloodstream and causing another potentially fatal infection

The family of Michael Schumacher have welcomed the news that the first corner of the Bahrain International Circuit will be renamed after the Formula One legend, who is still in a coma in a French hospital after a skiing accident in late December.

The seven-times world champion won the inaugural Bahrain race in 2004 and also advised on the design of the circuit.

Schumacher's representative, Sabine Kehm, said the German's family appreciated the move.
"Michael's family would like to thank the Bahrain International Circuit for this gesture, acknowledging Michael's achievements in Formula 1 and interest in the BIC circuit design," she said.

"We take it as a recognition for his passion for motorsport. I am convinced Michael will love the idea and feel very honoured about having a BIC corner named after him."

Bahrain International Circuit chairman Zayed al Zayani added in a statement released on Sunday:
"From his first appearance... in 2004, he immediately became an inspiration for all those who love motorsport in the Kingdom and it is therefore natural for us to recognise him in this way."

Schumacher also has a corner named after him at the Nuerburgring circuit in Germany.
The announcement was made on the last day of pre-season testing at the circuit ahead of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 16.
Bahrain hosts the third round of the championship on 6 April, with the race becoming an evening event under floodlights for the first time as part of 10th anniversary celebrations.

Schumacher, 45, has undergone two operations since sustaining brain injuries after hitting his head on a rock while skiing with his family in the French Alpine resort of Meribel on 29 December.
Doctors at the hospital in Grenoble started waking him up progressively by lowering his sedation in early February but there have been no medical updates for some weeks.
Forza Michael

Michael Schumacher needs "a miracle" to survive, doctors reportedly tell his family

Doctors treating Michael Schumacher and other medical experts have told his family that "only a miracle" can save him, sources have claimed.

The seven-time Formula One world champion suffered serious brain injuries after hitting a rock during a skiing accident in the French Alpine ski resort of Meribel in late December.

He is being treated in hospital in Grenoble where he has been in an artificially induced coma for a total of 69 days.

Sources close to his family say the 45-year-old driver's wife Corinna and his brother, Ralf Schumacher, have been consulting brain specialists throughout Europe and have been told that his chances of recovery are minimal.

The family is said to be concerned that the French doctors treating Schumacher have little hope that he will recover and now assume that he will remain in a vegetative state for the rest of his life.

Experts point out that most artificial comas last for an average of three weeks. Schumacher's management team has insisted that doctors are gradually reducing drug levels to bring the driver out of his artificial coma and that he is currently in a "wake up" phase.

In a statement released on Friday, Schumacher's management team insisted there had been no change. "Michael is still in a wake up phase, the situation has not altered," said the driver's management team spokeswoman Sabine Kehm

At the management team's request, the Grenoble hospital treating Schumacher has kept news about his condition to a minimum. However sources close to his family say that the driver's prognosis is bleak. "The family has been told that only a miracle can bring him back now," a senior German journalist reporting on the Schumacher case said. " He is in a bad way but until the family issues a formal statement, we cannot publish anything," he added.

Another source added: "Doctors have given it to them straight. Miracles sometimes happen but there is little hope that he will come out of this."

A fortnight ago, Germany's Focus magazine reported that complications had obliged doctors to halt Schumacher's wake up process and that the driver had been put back into a coma. However Schumacher's management team denied the report.

Coma experts have stressed that the past week should have been crucial for Schumacher's wake up process as doctors would have been hoping for a sign that he was gradually becoming aware of his surroundings.

However last Sunday, the Schumacher family is reported to have spent Corinna Schumacher's 45th birthday gathered around the comatose driver's hospital bed praying in vain for him to acknowledge their presence.

Doctors say that the greatest risk facing the driver while he remains in a coma and unable to swallow properly, is the possibility that he will contract pneumonia as a result of his lungs being filled with fluid.

Should Schumacher manage to emerge from his coma, there appears to be little likelihood that he would be able to live a normal, active life.

Gary Hartstein, a former Formula One doctor told the German media last week: "The majority of patients who come out of a coma alive after this amount of time suffer severe disabilities
Poor, poor Michael.

The thing is there's a lot of conflicting comments in each article we see about it so it's impossible to understand what's true and what's not, someone on sky sports said a few weeks ago to not believe anything that the media reports on this until it's a direct statement from his family.

After reading this latest article it doesn't sound good but I'm still hoping he comes through this
