it's something about the players not getting any money for a promotional video that they did, so the top 16 players in the world at the time quit the bdo and set up their own tournament and then got involved with sky and the rest is history.

BDO is basically like a feeder organisation for the PDC nowadays, most young players tend to play in the BDO first before going to the PDC
